Though often lost on moderns who fetishize the handmade, there was, in the nineteenth century, an aesthetic pleasure in identical objects.

gorbachev, capitalism, and pizza

"...Gorbachev also said he would not have agreed to promote just anything... Pizza is a special kind of food, Gorbachev says, because it does what he always wanted to do: It brings people together. 'It's an important part of life,' he said. 'It's not only consumption, it's also socializing. If I didn't see that it was beneficial for people, I wouldn't have agreed to it.'"

this installation is awesome

i never saw it in real life, but when vanessa renwick came to evergreen she made it sound pretty cool. i've only seen the film that accompanies it. it's from her Portrait series that documents places in the greater "Cascadia" region. this portrait is about the House of Sound, a record store founded in 64 in a neighborhood in portland and recently torn down. the film is shot in 35mm and it looks beautiful. the imagery is pretty simple, just footage of the space where the building used to be, but the soundtrack is what makes it amazing. the sound is excerpts of a broadcast on a radio show paying homage to the record store while a saxophone plays.

the installation was meant to be set up like a 60s/70s living room, with a bunch of soul and r&b records and a turntable. anyone was allowed to play whatever records they wanted. the people at the installation space told her that sometimes people would just go into the installation and sit there for hours listening to records. there's also the original sign of the store. she had to steal it because the wrecking crew was just gonna throw it away.

i'm writing too much about this, just check this link:

anyway, this is the filmmaker that just emailed me today to say that'd she'd love to come and have a screening in tijuana. cool.

have no words to say about this

Kosher Cell phones

The article examines how religious communities responded to the technology of cellular phone, by discussing the process that religious user communities undergo when negotiating with technology. The emergence of the kosher cellular phone in Israel is explored. It has found out that religious communities evaluate, monitor and control the use of technology by their members in deliberate ways. Religious culture and belief serve as an important factor in technological innovation as demonstrated by the kosher phone in Israel.

New Zealand politician stuns with Ku Klux Klan outfit

New Zealand politician stuns with Ku Klux Klan outfitWellington - A small town New Zealand politician stunned a local council meeting by appearing in a Ku Klux Klan outfit with a sign reading, "It's wotz under da hood dat counts," according to news reports Friday.

Dale Evans wore the outfit to protest at the declaration of Friday as "National Hoodie Day," which the government's Youth Affairs Ministry is funding to challenge what it calls negative perceptions of young people, who wear the ubiquitous sweatshirts with hoods over their heads.

Evans told Television New Zealand that "hoodies," which have been banned by some shopping malls who say groups of young people wearing them intimidate customers, were not an appropriate article of clothing to celebrate.

Ann Chapman, deputy mayor of the Kapiti Coast District Council, told Wellington's Dominion Post, "It was outrageous, a poorly chosen disguise and disrespectful to what some American black people went through in the Deep South."

Ron Mark, a member of Parliament for the nationalist New Zealand First party, also condemned "National Hoodie Day," saying, "It is so inflammatory and incites the wrath of the average Kiwi out there who is struggling to deal with the tagging on their streets and the gang culture of some young people who use thehoodie, who use black American rap culture as their theme." WAZZUP

Resident x is hit repeatedly with visions of poverty. Underemployed and barely searching. Yesterday seen hauling a 20lb bag of onions on her back. On the verge of a 23rd year. We could draw a map that directly correlates x's increasing impoverishment to the amount of education she has received. With any luck, things has leveled off for awhile.

kill your doppelganger

hey,

i have some jalapeno potato chips if anyone wants to have them.
also, i thought i saw this one person at the computer lab today, so i went up to her and when i was close enough to realize it wasn't her i felt stupid and obligated to sit next to this person and pretend i was using the computer. i wonder though if it really was her and she was ignoring me. is it possible to not recognize someone when s/he is sitting right beside you? are there certain angles at which people look completely different? i don't know, and this isn't what i think about. i just thought we needed another post for the new year.

mallory's party tonight is gonna be good.
